Summer learning works, according to two Oregon Department of Education reports issued Monday.
House Bill 4082 (2024) allotted $30 million for summer learning grants and directed ODE to study the results and propose recommendations. The State Summer Learning Grant 2024 Implementation Analysis Report and 2024 Summer SEED Student Perception Survey Report show summer learning investments had tangible results for engaging students and improving academic progress.
According to the reports:
- 28,187 additional students were served through the summer learning grants, reaching a higher percentage of underserved student groups than their statewide representation.
- 4,627 students earned high school credits.
- More than 79% of summer programs met goals for improving math, science and literacy.
- More than 90% of students reported feeling welcomed, supported and respected.
In January, ODE released a related report calling for Oregon to invest $100 million in the next biennium in summer and after-school learning.
