OSBA Salutes the Southern Oregon ESD for teaming up with a local television station to produce Learning Matters, a weekly two-minute spotlight on education.

Superintendent Steve Boyarsky and ESD video producer Perry Young approached all three local news stations this fall with the idea. KTVL’s News 10 crew jumped at the opportunity (however, since then other stations are running similar programs about education on their own).

Segments air during “prime time” – Every Thursday during the 6 and 11 p.m. news shows and on Friday at 6 a.m. So far they’ve featured local educators, student accomplishments, volunteering and online programs. They’ll air 44 segments during the school year.

Shows are scripted and produced by Young, who came to the ESD with 20 years of experience in local television journalism. A KTVL reporter does the opening and ending narration.

“Our brand statement at KTVL is ‘making a difference,’” says News Director Gordon Godfrey. “We’re always looking for opportunities to improve the community – and this is a great partnership.”

The goal is not to focus attention on the ESD, says Boyarsky, noting the station and the ESD serve the same regional audience. “We want the public to see what’s happening in all our school districts, so we focus on schools.”

The ESD plans to include the segments on its Web site eventually; they’re also shown on the ESD’s local cable broadcast, which also feeds into school districts.
