A letter from 2007-08 President-elect Annette Mattson
Dear OSBA members:
At the 2007 convention, we overwhelmingly voted in favor of the changes proposed by the OSBA Governance Committee. Amending our OSBA Constitution this past November means there are now more opportunities than ever for members to be involved and to make OSBA an ever stronger, more vibrant advocate for public education in Oregon.
The "re-invention" of OSBA is already under way. The call has gone out for nominations for the Legislative Policy Committee. Now it's time to begin the process of nominating candidates for positions on the OSBA board, because - as always, along with opportunity comes responsibility! I invite you to become more active in your association; consider running for a position on the OSBA board - or seriously encourage a colleague on your board or in your region to be a candidate.
I urge you to seize this opportunity to take part in setting the course for OSBA as we continue to work for education and serve the elected boards that serve all Oregon's public-school students.
Annette Mattson
OSBA President-elect

Nomination process
Any local board (district, ESD or community college) in an area may nominate an individual for a vacant position, using an official nomination form, within the timelines in the OSBA elections calendar and based on the following provisions:
- Candidates must be active members of a local board in the area.
- Candidates must certify that they are willing to serve, if elected, as a member of the OSBA board of directors.
- The nomination must be an official action of the local board in the area.
- Candidates must complete an OSBA board of directors candidate questionnaire and personal/professional resume form.
Nominating Candidates from Areas Represented by Multiple Positions
The more populated geographic areas have two or three OSBA board positions:
- Clackamas Co. - positions 7 and 8
- Marion Co. - positions 11 and 12
- Multnomah Co. - positions 17*, 18, 19
- Washington Co. - positions 15 and 16
To nominate a candidate for the board from any of these areas, you must state the specific position for which that person is nominated. Candidates may run for only one position.
The only difference in the positions is the length of time those elected will serve in the initial term - odd-numbered positions will serve a two-year term; even-numbered positions will serve an initial term of three years.
* Annette Mattson, as 2008 president-elect, is the board member for position 17. Her two-year term will be served as president in 2009 and past-president in 2010.
Campaigning
For campaigning purposes only, OSBA will provide candidates with mailing lists and e-mail addresses of board members in their area upon request. Lists will be available at no charge to candidates, along with instructions for proper use.
OSBA will post a picture and information about each candidate online based on the information submitted on the candidate questionnaire and professional resume on the OSBA Web site. OSBA will link to candidates' Web sites, if candidates provide URLs.
Candidate conduct
Candidates shall not defame any other candidate through misinformation, gossip or innuendo. Complaints of non-compliance are to be reported to the OSBA president-elect at
OSBAelections@osba.org.

Officer Nomination And Election
OSBA officers include the president, president-elect, vice president, secretary/treasurer, and the past-president. Officers will be nominated by the board of directors from among its members. Additional nominations for officer positions (of current OSBA board members) can be made by any member board at the annual membership meeting in November. Officers will be elected by member boards (each board casts one vote for each office). Officers serve one-year terms. President and past-president positions are filled automatically by the current president-elect and president respectively.
