What are the rules for making up snow days?

Many districts are facing this problem as winter weather has forced districts to close schools more than average this year. There are certain holidays that you are not allowed to require attendance. They include:

• Saturdays;
• Sundays;
• New Year’s Day;
• Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday on the third Monday in January;
• Memorial Day;
• Independence Day;
• Labor Day;
• Veterans Day on November 11;
• Thanksgiving Day; and
• Christmas Day. See ORS 187.010 and ORS 336.010.

Districts can use President’s Day and spring break as make ups days, and depending on the collective bargaining agreement, may be able to use teacher in-service or professional development days. Districts should look closely at their policies IC/ICA and EBCD for guidance related to the district calendar and emergency closures.
