Golden Joins In Recognizing Oregon's School Boards

Oregon Chief Education Officer Nancy Golden singled out local school board members for praise Friday in her weekly email.

Golden joined Gov. Kitzhaber in recognizing January as School Board Member Appreciation Month, thanking "the thousands of members who volunteer their time to support student achievement each year." Here are some excerpts from her email:

"There are more than 197 local school boards, 19 education service district boards and 17 community college boards in Oregon comprised of volunteers who are elected to advocate for students and represent their communities on education issues.  They serve as a critical backbone of our education system, driving local strategies and governance that is most effective in their communities in preparing students for their future."

"In the years ahead, as we work toward reaching our 40-40-20 goal, School Board Members will play an instrumental role in devising innovative and collaboratively driven solutions that ensure that each and every student in their community is on track. Thank you to all of you for your extraordinary effort on behalf of students. I’m eager to work together in the year ahead to collectively improve the student trajectory around the state."
